Until the early 1800's, rail cars and wagons were pulled along tracks by horses. The term "Iron Horse" was used to describe the early steam locomotives that gradually replaced the horses. Iron Horse Express is a piece that musically depicts a steam train on its journey, complete with the sound of bells, whistles and hissing steam! The optional vocal effects of escaping steam will enhance the overall work, but are not essential to the performance. Placing bows down for the pizzicato passages near the beginning of the piece may help in maintaing a steady tempo.
